We want to ensure clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas, and we are doing more now than ever before to protect our marine environment.
To safeguard our seas, we are:
- Establishing over 500 UK marine protected areas, including 27 new marine conservation zones in English waters;
- Protecting vulnerable species like whales, sharks and rays;
- Implementing eleven marine plans, enabling sustainable uses in England;
- New laws to fish sustainably and bans on the discarding of fish, beginning from January 2015; and
- Investing over £25 million in marine fisheries science.
