Fisheries Minister George Eustice showed his commitment to reducing marine litter when he was presented with a pair of recycled socks this week.
The socks are made from 100% recycled nylon, with 28% coming from recycled fishing gear.
They were presented to George Eustice by World Animal Protection UK, who are raising awareness of the potential impact of lost fishing gear and promoting the recycling of redundant fishing gear instead of sending it to landfill.
If you would like to reduce litter and in particular litter entering the marine environment, there are lots of ways to help.
Our scientists believe that much of the litter found in the marine environment comes from sources on the land, so one of the best ways to keep plastics and other litter out of the sea is to dispose of all your waste carefully, recycling as much as possible.
There are also many fantastic organisations that run beach litter picks. These are a great way to directly improve the cleanliness of our seas and beaches, so why not find one near you and get involved?
