Fisheries Minister visits Grimsby

GE in Grimsby

On Monday and Tuesday of this week the Fisheries Minister George Eustice visited Grimsby where he saw first-hand the significance of the area to fish processing in the UK.

He kicked off his visit on Monday night by having a fish dinner with representatives from Seafish.  Then it was an early start and a tour of Grimsby Fish Market where the Minister saw the morning’s catch and talked to people that work on the docks about the future of the industry in Grimsby.

After that he moved on to Seafood Village, which houses small fish processing units, and talked to business owners about how to boost their businesses and encourage more people to eat seafood. Then Morrison’s fish processing unit was next on the agenda, where he saw whole salmon and cod cleaned and filleted and packaged up for distribution across the country.

Finally, at Seafish headquarters, the Minister was talked through the new Fish is the Dish education packs - a brand new set of lesson plans and workbooks aimed at teachers and children aged between 5-8.  The packs are the first to fit with the new National Curriculum for England and aim to encourage children to eat more fish in seafood.
